Her father, Nilmani Chattopadhyay, was a Kirtan artist, and her mother, Radharani Chattopadhyay, supported her early artistic inclinations. Despite financial constraints, Uma received training in dance and music from a young age.

Career
Uma Sashi began her career as a dancer in theatrical productions, gradually transitioning to minor acting roles. She made her debut in silent films with "Bangabala" and gained prominence with the advent of sound cinema, notably appearing in "Dena Paona" in 1931. Her collaboration with renowned music director Pankaj Kumar Mallick further cemented her position in the industry.

Personal Life
Uma Sashi married Mr. Guru Prasad Dev, an attorney from the esteemed Shobhabazar Rajbari family. Despite societal challenges, their union endured, and they were blessed with four children. Uma Sashi balanced her familial responsibilities with occasional engagements in the film industry.
